The story of this place
Perched on Misa Hill overlooking Vršac, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is affectionately known to local residents as the Little Church on the Hill. This small Roman Catholic chapel is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town and an important reminder of its religious, cultural and historical heritage. From the terrace beside the chapel, visitors can enjoy magnificent views of Vršac, its distinctive church towers, surrounding settlements and the seemingly endless Banat Plain. The Oldest Catholic Chapel in Banat The history of the Chapel of the Holy Cross dates back to 1720, when construction began on a Roman Catholic place of worship on the hillside above Vršac. This was a period of renewed development following the withdrawal of Ottoman rule, when new settlers, including German-speaking Catholics, arrived in Banat. Construction was financed through voluntary donations from believers and prominent benefactors, with the support of the local administration. Among those associated with the project was Christoph Payer, the administrator of the Vršac district, who helped organise the construction. The chapel was completed in 1728 and soon became one of the most important gathering places for Catholic believers in this part of Banat. According to the Diocese of Zrenjanin, it is the oldest chapel and oldest pilgrimage site within the diocese. The Historic Way of the Cross One of the site's most distinctive features is the Way of the Cross, which leads from the foot of the hill to the chapel. The Way of the Cross symbolically represents the Passion of Jesus Christ through fourteen stations commemorating events from his condemnation to his burial. The historic devotional route was established in 1766 and has undergone several restorations over the centuries. Today, climbing the steps is a memorable experience for pilgrims, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Along the route, greenery and historic stone features accompany increasingly impressive views of the town. Reaching the chapel rewards visitors with a magnificent panorama. A Chapel That Survived Turbulent Times During its nearly three centuries of existence, the Chapel of the Holy Cross has experienced periods of damage, looting and restoration. A particularly interesting chapter of its history is associated with the religious reforms of Emperor Joseph II of the Habsburg Monarchy, when numerous religious institutions were closed or dissolved. According to local historical accounts, religious services at the chapel were suspended and the building was offered for sale. However, the people of Vršac managed to purchase the chapel and preserve it. Following the emperor's death, it was returned to religious use. This remarkable story illustrates the special importance the chapel held for the local community. A Place of Pilgrimage and Spirituality Since its foundation, the Chapel of the Holy Cross has been an important destination for Catholic pilgrims. Believers traditionally gathered on the hill to participate in prayers, religious ceremonies and processions along the Way of the Cross. The chapel is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church on 14 September. Although the interior is not regularly open for tourist visits today, the site retains its special place in the religious heritage of Vršac. Its significance extends beyond one religious community, having become part of the town's shared cultural identity. One of the Finest Viewpoints in Vršac Beside the chapel is a landscaped viewpoint, widely regarded as one of the best places to admire the town from above. The viewpoint was improved in 2007, making the area even more attractive to tourists and day-trippers. Visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the historic town centre, Saint Gerard's Church, surrounding neighbourhoods and the vast plains of Banat. The scenery is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, when the setting sun bathes the town and surrounding landscape in warm light. For this reason, the viewpoint is popular with photographers, nature lovers and visitors seeking a different perspective on Vršac. A Favourite Destination for Walking and Recreation The climb to the Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of the best-known recreational routes in Vršac. The hillside staircase is especially popular with walkers, runners and fitness enthusiasts. Visitors looking for a more relaxed outing can approach the viewpoint area using the surrounding access roads, while those seeking a more active experience can choose the historic staircase. The chapel and viewpoint can also be included in a longer exploration of the Vršac Hills, together with the Church of Saint Theodore of Vršac and Vršac Tower. Why Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross? The Chapel of the Holy Cross offers a unique combination of history, spirituality, natural beauty and breathtaking panoramic views. Visitors can discover the early Catholic heritage of Banat, walk along the historic Way of the Cross and enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Vršac.
